Background of the study:
Migration, both internal and external, significantly influences the demand for healthcare services and the capacity of local health systems. In Calabar South, an influx of migrants has led to an increased burden on healthcare facilities, often outpacing the available resources and infrastructure (Ekaette, 2023). Migrants may require a wide range of health services, from acute care to chronic disease management, which challenges existing service delivery models. Additionally, migration may alter the demographic profile of the community, leading to changes in disease prevalence and health service needs (Ife, 2024). The resulting strain on healthcare resources can lead to longer waiting times, reduced quality of care, and potential disparities in service access. This study examines how migration patterns affect healthcare demand and the effectiveness of service delivery in Calabar South by analyzing statistical health records, demographic data, and stakeholder interviews. The research aims to offer policy recommendations that address these challenges and improve healthcare planning and resource allocation in response to dynamic population changes (Mbanefo, 2025).
Statement of the problem:
In Calabar South Local Government Area, rapid migration has led to increased healthcare demand, straining existing service delivery systems. This surge challenges healthcare providers, leading to reduced quality of care and resource shortages. Understanding these dynamics is essential to formulate strategies that improve health service delivery amidst changing demographics (Ojong, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
1. To assess the impact of migration on healthcare demand.
2. To evaluate the capacity of current health services to meet increased demand.
3. To propose strategies for better resource allocation and service delivery.
Research questions:
1. How does migration affect healthcare demand in Calabar South?
2. What are the challenges faced by healthcare facilities due to increased migration?
3. What measures can enhance service delivery in response to migration-induced demand?
Research Hypotheses:
1. Migration significantly increases healthcare service demand.
2. Increased migration is associated with reduced healthcare service quality.
3. Strategic resource allocation improves service delivery amidst high migration rates.
Significance of the study:
This study is pivotal in understanding the impact of migration on healthcare demand and service delivery, offering evidence-based recommendations to optimize resource distribution and enhance patient care in Calabar South (Eze, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating the effect of migration on healthcare demand and service delivery in Calabar South Local Government Area, focusing solely on local migration patterns and health service data.
Definitions of terms:
1. Migration: The movement of people from one region to another.
2. Healthcare Demand: The need for medical services by a population.
3. Service Delivery: The provision of healthcare services to the community.
